This print is taken from “Antiquities of Herculaneum” (“Le Antichita’ di Ercolano Esposte”), an eight -volume series of engravings of the finds from the newly excavated ruins of Herculaneum. Published between 1757 and 1792 by by the Regia Stamperia (Royal Press), the book covered all the excavations undertaken through the Bourbons in the Gulf of Naples (including Pompeii and Stabia). There were 15 artists involved in the illustration of the finds. The selective distribution of these sumptuous volumes did much to influence the neo classical movement throughout Europe.
